February and Mardi Gras

Hi everyone!

Unfortunately, my Mardi Gras break was occupied with coughing and sneezing in my bed. Perhaps the stress of trying to study for the MCAT and our exams has been taking a toll on me. We have been learning about stress and its effects on the body long term. The immune system does not produce as many lymphocytes in times of stress, which is maybe why I got sick!

So far, there has been no updates on volunteering - I will definitely be very busy in these upcoming months! I plan on trying to volunteer towards environmental conservation and community based events. The environment directly affects people in our community so I would like to see if there is any waste pickup events or other forms of environmental and community outreach in NOLA. I also have friends that regularly volunteer, so I will be asking to join them as well.

It is important to be aware of the power an individual has to impact their community, no matter the magnitude. An individual can learn this power with volunteering! As I have mentioned in previous posts, I appreciate that this program puts emphasis on volunteering. It teaches students and myself to serve for others in a way that is selfless, and it shows people that being present for members of the community always has a positive impact. The thinking that goes along with volunteering and serving others is the same thinking that is necessary to be a person practicing medicine.
